Yet More Tunings Stuff

I'm finding it next to impossible, or at least very uncomfortable, to play some tunes in G, sawmill, and double C. For example, "Chilly Winds". I'm not a "up and down the neck" kind of guy, so I'm wondering if it's advisable to learn a few more tunings. If so, do you have any suggestions? I use to play in open D sometimes, but I actually played only one or two songs in that tuning, so I kicked the open D habit. I guess what I'm really wondering is if it's worthwhile to learn a new tuniing, and re-tune, just for one-off songs. While I'm at it, do you have any suggestions for "Chilly Winds"? Isn't there anything like a one-size-fits-all tuning, like standard tuning for the guitar, without scrambling all over the banjo's neck?
