Left to my own devices….

While I don’t quite understand the different clawhammer styles, I’m not sure that my playing fits into any of them. I think it is because I hum what I play; For example, I can’t hum all the notes in Round Peak style so no can do. Then, I punctuate my playing because I can't hum in the singsong style of Melodic clawhammer and I can’t hum chords so playing chords is out. I think I’ve come up with my own style (good or bad) just by what I can and can’t do.

I’ve also been drifting away from learning new tunes to composing my own. Part of this is because I can express myself better in my own tunes but sadly, the other part is that I’m not satisfied with my clumsy attempts at the Old Time standards. I also would like to sing with my playing but I can’t manage strumming chords while trying to sing. To me, it is the equivalent of rubbing my stomach and patting my head at the same time--I’m too uncoordinated. I am entering my 3rd year of learning banjo and I still feel like a lost beginner. Perhaps I’m just a bit discouraged today but I’m having trouble finding direction.
