Hi, i'm brand new to the banjo. i've spent a couple of weeks watching videos on the clawhammer style. i understand that when sounding single strings you use a knocking motion with your picking hand. i've watched numerous videos and read everything i could find online about how that knocking motion is done; but i still can't figure out if the striking finger comes straight down on the string, like in a knocking motion, or if the finger actually brushes the string, like a strumming motion. when i practice i can't get the string to sound well if i knock straight down. don't you have to strum/brush the string (a little) in order to get it to play. i don't want to start a bad habit that i can't unlearn later on. am i missing something. thank you. arron.
