Hey...I'm a pretty new clawhammer banjo player...still tryin to figure stuff out...but basically I would love to start a jug band but I have no idea how to play that jug band sound with clawhammer and am having a hard time finding resources that clearly explain how to play it.
I can get down lots of the classic clawhammer banjo tunes but want to move on to jug band or even old blues/ragtime sounding stuff. Is there anyway to play jug band/blues/ragtime on clawhammer? and if so, how? what kinds of chord progression? I know lots of jug band/ragtime stuff goes once you get a few chord progressions you are set and can play around n improvise with it....but I wanna just get the basics down. Might be a silly question but...can you even play ragtime on clawhammer banjo (besides rangtime Annie haha)?? if so...pleaseeee someone share the secrets....even to just get the ragtime sound.
SO...I think I learned Five Foot Two Eyes Are Blue which has that jug band/string band kind of feel to it....so I'm looking for similar type songs.
Gus Cannon, Memphis Jug Band would love to learn "You may leave, but this will bring you back" etc. Just tryin to figure out the banjo's role in a jug band...and if I could do it in clawhammer style....like sometimes they are just background...what exactly is the banjo doing? what are the simple chord progressions?
Really anything...anything at all would help..simple chord progressions, licks, tabs, videos...simplify it as much as possible haha anything to get that jug band/string band or old blues or ragtime sound.
On a side note...while I'm asking advice...what on earth does "key of A" or "key of C" mean...I tune it and then what does it mean to be in the key of A or Key of C? if this involved a capo...that might explain my confusion since I have no idea what a capo really is or how to use it or whatever.
