I got my John Hartford heavy (D tuning) strings

First thing I noticed was that when I went to put them on my genuine Chinese-made Epiphone, the ones that are already on the banjo felt just as heavy as the new ones. Motivated by that, I tried tuning the Epiphone down to D -- something I just assumed I couldn't do before. It worked just fine, no rattle and stays in tune. The question I have is this: Is there a noticeable difference or feel to the strings that, before they're put on a banjo allows you to distinguish heavy from medium or light? Surely the strings my Epiphone came with aren't heavies, it's been tuned to open G  almost ever since I've owned it. I would have thought doing that with heavy strings would put an awful lot of tension on the neck. That banjo, by the way, has always been significantly louder than any of my other ones, could that be due to heavier than normal strings? In short, how can I tell ( without a micrometer ) whether a banjo has light, medium, or heavy strings on it?
