I was watching the short youtube video last night, by George Gibson. He was explaining his view of how to play OT banjo. My understanding is that he gets a lot of the fluidity in his playing, as well as those neat "doubled-up- on" notes ( Sorry, I can't figure out how to better explain it ) using left-hand techniques -- hammers, pulls. BHO member Clifton Hicks, who I think learned a lot of his playing from George Gibson, also has that wonderful fluid sound to his playing. Is that kind of thing achieved via the left hand, or have I grossly misinterpreted? What they ( Gibson and Hicks ) do doesn't sound at all like clawhammer, and it doesn't sound like Pete Seeger's up-picking style, either. I sure wish I knew what to practice, in order to get anywhere near the kind of sound they get in their playing. Anyone have any suggestions?
